Sermon No. 03

You Are Not Behind

Repeat after me: you are not behind. Now say it again, because the first time doesn’t count. The first time is just words. The second time is a decision.

I know why it doesn’t land. Because you have a list. You have a list of people your age who own more, post more, sleep less, launch faster, and seem — from the outside, from a rectangle in your hand — to have figured out the one thing you haven’t. And every time you open the app, the list gets longer. That’s not a coincidence, friend. That’s the product. The list is the product.

“You are behind” is not a fact. It’s a story they sold you, so you’d buy the course, the coach, and the comeback.

Think about it. If you were on time, there’d be nothing to sell you. The entire economy of self-improvement depends on you believing you’re late. Your lateness is their inventory. They stock it, they shelve it, they sell it back to you at a markup, and they call it a transformation.

And here’s the part that stings: you bought the clock, too. Nobody put it on your wrist. You strapped it on yourself, wound it with your own hands, and now you’re sprinting toward a finish line somebody else drew on a map you never agreed to.

Let me offer you a different arithmetic. There is no universal timeline. There is only the one you’re standing in. The founder who sold at thirty is not ahead of the woman who started at fifty, because they’re not on the same road — they’re not even in the same story. Comparison is what happens when two different lives get flattened onto one screen. The screen lies. It has to. It was built to.

So what do you do with the feeling? Not suppress it. Not shame it. Use it as a signal. When you feel behind, you’ve just been handed a receipt: somebody sold you a finish line, and you picked it up. Put it down.

Then do the only thing that actually moves a life: the next small honest thing. Not the five-year plan. Not the personal brand. Not the morning routine you copied from a stranger with better lighting. The next honest thing — the phone call, the page, the walk, the apology, the nap. Small, real, yours.

Wisdom isn’t knowing more. It’s needing less. Less proof that you’re winning. Less permission to begin. Less noise pretending to be information.

You are not behind. “Behind” is a story. Your life is not a story yet — it’s today, and it’s happening right now, and it does not care what the rectangle thinks.

Start where you are. It’s the only place that was ever real.

Eternal slack — or triple your money back.
